Thailand’s limited international bandwidth tends to lead to somewhat slow bittorrent transfer speeds especially during peak internet usage hours. This short guide shows you how to uses Vuze with the Ono plugin in order to prioritize Bittorrent connections to peers closest to Thailand thus reducing bottlenecks and increasing upload/download speeds.

Please note that this guide is not perfect but it will increase the odds of you getting better speed.

First things first, a few observations:

Judging by the Internet map and experience with testing various mirrors of linux distrubutions, Thailand seems to have a alot of bandwidth internally, as well as going to Singapore, Japan and Korea but not much anywhere else (it seems the other pipes are all clogged).

Ono is “an plugin for Vuze that uses CDN redirection information to identify nearby peers and potentially accelerate downloads” and it also has a manual peer biasing function. We will use the peer biasing function to specify peers in Thailand, Singapore, Japan and Korea as a CIDR format which I got from http://www.countryipblocks.net/

Before we get started, we’ll need 3 things.

1. Vuze bittorrent client.
2. Ono plugin for vuze (you can install it in vuze itself, using Tools–>Plugins–>Installation wizard using “by list from sourceforge”)
3. CIDR file extracted into a folder of your choice (I put mine in C:\Program Files (x86)\Vuze\plugins\Ono since I’m using Vista, if you’re using XP you can put it into C:\Program Files\Vuze\plugins\Ono)

Then,

In vuze, go to tools->options->Plugins->Ono click to open folder (1) and select the file, it should look similar to this screenshot:

Click “Apply” and you’re set!
